Meet Gail and Peter

He once cut their own firewood. Now they need your help.

When winter arrives, some of our older neighbors face a difficult reality: without support, they may struggle to keep warm. For older adults living on fixed incomes or managing physical limitations, everyday winter tasks can become overwhelming. While many seniors are determined to remain independent in their own homes, deep snow, icy conditions, and bitter cold can quickly transform that independence into a challenge they cannot face alone.

To ensure older adults do not have to choose between warmth and safety, Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly (LBFE) provides firewood assistance free of charge. Volunteers deliver seasoned firewood that is cut, split, and ready to use. For older adults who already have logs on their property but can no longer process them, volunteers will cut, split, and stack their wood so they can heat their homes throughout the winter.

“The kids who came out to split and stack our wood were just wonderful. They were so respectful, worked incredibly hard, and were such a pleasure to talk with,” said Gail and Peter, recipients of both LBFE’s firewood delivery and wood-processing assistance programs.

Peter, a former logger, and Gail, a retired nurse, have spent a lifetime building a life they love. Peter is an internationally recognized woodcarver whose work has been featured through the Scandinavian Foundation. Resourceful and creative, he designed and built a beautiful, dovetailed log shed and an innovative system to move firewood from the shed directly into their basement. Because severe neuropathy in his legs and one hand has taken away his ability to cut, split, or carry wood, Gail and Peter turned to LBFE for support with their firewood to make it through the long, harsh winters.

This winter, your gift can be the difference between an older adult facing the cold alone or having the warmth, security, and support they need to remain safe at home. Every donation helps provide firewood, volunteer assistance, and compassionate companionship for seniors who have nowhere else to turn.

Please make your gift today and help ensure that no older adult in our community goes without heat this winter.
