Drive to Care

LBFE is seeking volunteers to help drive older adults to medical appointments in Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, Marquette, and Ontonagon Counties.

By becoming a volunteer, you can:

  • Volunteer around your schedule.

  • Make meaningful connections with lonely older adults.

  • Help older adults get to vital healthcare medical appointments.

  • Receive mileage reimbursement if you use your own vehicle.

How to Volunteer

Individuals interested in volunteering need to submit an application, receive a background check, and complete a free orientation and training. If you have a barrier to volunteering that would be reduced by receiving mileage reimbursement, request a mileage reimbursement form.

Mileage Reimbursement

Mileage reimbursement is available to volunteers who use their own vehicle to reduce the cost barrier to volunteering.

Reimbursements not used help fund other transportation program expenses to help older adults have access to these services.

Those unable to volunteer are invited to make a donation to the project.

Med Trans 2.0 Pilot Project

LBFE piloted and completed a multi-year pilot project, Med Trans 2.0, to rebuild capacity and re-engage the community in response to an increasing demand for non-emergent medical transportation and a declining volunteer corps.

We're glad to report successful outcomes with this detailed report.

The Drive to Care pilot project, Med Trans 2.0, has been made possible through the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation, Copper Shores Community Health Foundation, Mary Thompson Foundation, Superior Health Foundation, and The Clare Foundation.
